This AAwipes Lead Test Swab Kit works, but the coloring seems to be a bit weak. The back of the canister shows a graduated color scale. So you would expect a non-lead item to turn the test swab orange and a 100% lead item to show dark purple. Smaller amounts of lead will be lighter purple or reddish in color. The single-use swabs are easy to use. Just dip the swab in water to wet, and rub the wet swab on the surface that you want to test for about 15 seconds. Then check the tip for any color change. It can take a little while for the color to gradually change, so give it a minute and don’t be quick to judge.I tried one of these swabs on a non-lead surface and it looked orange. Then I swabbed a couple of lead fishing sinkers and those swabs turned purple but very faintly. I would have expected them to be dark purple! But if it changes to any shade of pink, red or purple, you know there is some lead present.

While these lead test swabs are very easy to use, I'm not sure how well they work. I tried testing on several objects including a figurine that I am positive is made of lead, and I never got a single positive result. On the plus side, that means you won't get any false positives from these.

I can’t totally confirm that this works because I haven’t had it show up positive yet, but it is incredibly easy to use.

Review of AAwipes Lead Test Swabs Upgraded Version Rapid Home Lead Paint Test Swabs, for Paint, Toys, Dishes (Use Water Only) 30 Seconds Quick Quantitative Results for Toy Jewelry Wood (LSW-30)Condition: fine. Swabs are well made. The wood sticks are smooth, no splinters. The cotton end is wound tight and is firmly attached.Impressions: When moistened they turn yellow as they're supposed to. As to turning color with exposure to lead I'm not sure. I tested paint and areas that I'm all but certain contain lead but I got only a very minor reaction. I saw enough of a color change that it did give me an indication of lead but it wasn't really definitive. The other issue is the cotton swabs tend to pull and tear on any rough surface so that makes it harder to use. It helps to use a rolling motion but it still doesn't seem to make good contact. It wouldn't be a bad idea to use these as a quick guide which is the point, I suppose but I'd be happier getting a clearer sign. The swab on the right in the photos show as much of a color change as I could get from paint chips that I know are from the era when paint contained lead. For something so important I'd like a clearer sign. Four stars in case it's user error.I will keep trying these and if I find a clearly definable color change I will update the review. Right now I just can't say with certainty that they're reliable.
