I needed a soft-faced hammer to use with a hatchet for precision splitting of kindling, and found a lead hammer to be effective but short-lived before it deformed too much. I looked for a wooden mallet, but couldn't find a short-handled one heavy enough for the job. I finally ran across these split hammers, and dubiously (they are pretty pricey) selected one with rawhide faces for enough durability to handle the heavy impacts without damaging the hatchet's poll. So far, it has worked very well; it packs a big wallop and has shown no signs of damage to the rawhide faces. It appears well and sturdily made, and has an oval handle cross-section with palm swell that makes picking up the hammer with one of the faces in proper striking orientation completely intuitive; there's no need to even look to see if it's properly oriented.
