I've been wanting to try punch needling for a long time, and this set seemed like a good starting point to get a feel for what it's like, and I was not disappointed!I have a long history in fiber arts, mostly knitting and crochet, plus some embroidery/cross stitch and needlepoint. I design crochet patterns and would like to eventually design some knitting patterns as well. I was, however, brand new to the punch needle craft. This kit was perfect for me to get started, mostly. The set comes with everything you need to get started - a pre-printed design on the proper cloth which is already attached onto a wooden frame (no additional embroidery hoop needed). I will mention here that the cloth could be stretched a tiny bit tighter onto the frame, but it's pretty functional, so on one hand, I appreciate not having to grapple with an embroidery hoop, but on the other, I wish I had the option of shoring it up a bit more. The kit also comes with all of the yarn you'll need for this particular design. I haven't completed it yet, so I can't yet speak to whether there will be yarn left over or if I'll run short. In addition to the aforementioned items, the kit also included 2 different punch needles (one fixed length needle with a wood handle, and one slightly larger adjustable needle that I think will allow for making different sized loops (the length of the needle can be extended or shortened). Each needle also came with its own threader, and they were also nice enough to include a yarn cutter (not the best I've ever seen, but also not the worst!).There are also instruction sheets included - one shows you how to thread the punch needle using the included needle threaders, and the other provides starter instructions on how to actually perform the craft. Both of these sheets include helpful images. The instructions on how to perform the craft, I have to say, are a little lacking and include some typos (this is what caused me to remove one star). After reading through them a couple of times, I had to resort to YouTube for a tutorial video before it really clicked for me. Once I did that, I was off to a good start. It takes some time to get comfortable with the process and to get the stitches evenly placed, but I can see that I will be able to master the craft in a short amount of time for (hopefully) really beautiful results. It's got my mind reeling on how to design my own patterns and try the craft with lighter weight yarn, or maybe embroidery thread with a smaller needle to see what kind of results I can get.I really look forward to doing more of this!
