They are what they are... They aren't the lightest pedal, but they always work well and last for ever. I got these to go back to SPD after I was unimpressed with crank bro egg beaters. I'm happy to be back to what I know and trust.

Shimano is a great, consistently reliable brand. These XT models are outstanding. Light, easy to clip in and out, but feels sturdy when cleat is engaged in the pedal. Only complaint is that I waited this long to replace my old ones. 10/10 would buy again.

These pedals are just plain bombproof. I have them on every one of my mountain bikes. They do exactly what they're supposed to do every time. It doesn't matter how much mud gets caked into my cleats; they lock in every time with no difficulty. They don't require much maintenance, and the little maintenance that you need to do is easy. I don't see myself ever buying a different model of pedal for my mountain bikes, and if I ever ride gravel I'll probably use these pedals for that.

Genuine Shimano parts that I use for Road riding with my mountain bike. Here, few Road shoulders and various potholes, so I use a mountain bike on the road!

As usual Shimano doesn’t disappoint with these XT pedals. Reasonably priced and so just what they say on the box. Strong and adjustable. They just work great.

For all cycling except performance road, I think the classic double-sided SPD design like the PD-M8100 is bar none the best design you can get. Shimano sells many versions of these pedals at various price points. Shimano's double sided SPD pedals are all very durable, very easy to use and don't get clogged with mud. I have several sets of the very similar PD-M540s on other bikes including cyclocross racing bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes and a fatbike. Earlier this year, I ordered a set of the PD-M8100 when I bought my nicest cross bike. The M8100s and M540s weigh within 10g of each other. They look very, very similar. I can't tell any difference riding between the two, they are functionally identical. I have absolutely abused all of these sets of pedals with numerous wet rides, rock strikes, muddy rides, freezing cold rides etc and yet all pairs have been entirely problem free and even maintenance free. The oldest set of the 540s I have is five years old and showing few signs of wear. Given that the 540s and the M8100 perform identically and the PD8100 is almost double the price, I don't think I'll buy the M8100s again.

I ride daily. These get a lot of use. They are simple to clip in and out. You can clip in on either side so there is minimal fuss to get your shoe lined up and clipped in. I recommend these to anyone who has never used clips as well as someone who is a seasoned user of clips.

I've been riding and racing bikes for 30 years and opted to make the switch from Time Atak's to XT SPD's recently. I think Time's have the edge on positive action for dismounts and remounts in muddy cyclocross racing but that's just my opinion. The SPD's are considerably more mechanical in how they feel, and they are far more adjustable, including lateral adjustment of the cleats, and quieter than Times. You can't go wrong with XT SPD's.
