Selecting the Right Cable for Your Project
18 Gauge
Drive speakers up to 32 feet @ 8 ohms or 16 feet @ 4 ohms. Conductor resistance: 21.9 ohms/km.
Alternatives:
- Spend less by using 22 gauge for applications where resistance higher than 21.9 ohms/km is acceptable.
- Upgrade to 16 gauge for speaker runs longer than 32ft (8 ohm) or 16ft (4 ohm); or for applications which require resistance less than 21.9 ohms/km.
2 Conductor Unshielded
Use for single channel speaker-level audio, low voltage lighting, or any low voltage application that requires 2 conductors.
Alternatives:
- Upgrade to 4 conductors for stereo speaker-level audio, LED lighting + control, or any low voltage application that requires 4 conductors.
- Choose a shielded cable for line-level audio or applications where electromagnetic interference (EMI) is expected.
Riser Rated
CL3R rated for installation in walls and risers (between floors) in both residential and commercial buildings.
Alternatives:
- Outdoor projects: use a Direct Burial rated cable for underground installation.
- Commercial projects: upgrade to a plenum (CL2P/CL3P) rated cable.
Bare Copper Conductors
Copper is the industry standard wiring material for a reason. Compared to aluminum, its higher conductivity translates into improved signal & power transmission and more performance headroom at a given length. Copper's lower electrical resistance means that it generates less heat, which is a crucial factor in preventing the degradation and breakdown of conductor insulation. Finally, copper is more durable than aluminum and won't break while being flexed or terminated.

Rigorous adherence to the UL 13 safety standard governing the construction of power-limited circuit cables, including acceptable materials and minimum thickness for conductors, insulation, shielding, and outer jacket; as well as tests for conductor continuity & resistance, insulation resistance, cold bending, and (when applicable) sunlight resistance, crushing, and water absorption.
Riser Rated — UL Listed
UL Listed with a Riser (CL3R) fire safety rating for installation in walls and risers (between floors) in both residential and commercial buildings in compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC). Good quality speaker wire in a lighter gauge, which is very easy to pull through walls and joists. The foot markings make it very easy to measure off shorter runs without guesswork or a tape measure. The wire itself is great for extending remote speakers into additional rooms, and connecting wired smoke/CO detectors. No cheap CCA wire here, just pure oxygen free copper.

This cable wire can easily be pulled out of the box. The wire is thick, and the quality is amazing.

The cable is well made. The jacket can be slit (with the inner cotton rip cord) or blade-stripped with very litle effort and comes off cleanly. The conductors are vividly colored and the colors are full thickness. Each conductor strips smoothly. The wire has very little coil memory and pulls easily in cable trays. The jacket is smooth and not at all tacky. The cores are real oxygen-free copper that keeps them fairly resistant to corrosion but still easy to solder. It has a UL listing, riser rating, and the outer jacket is clearly marked and has running foot markers as well.

This 18 AWG/Gauge 2 Conductor - UL Listed Riser Rated (CL2R/CL3R/CMR) - Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) - 500 Foot Bulk Cable Pull Box works great and makes installation easy. The quality is great and just what I would expect for cost.
