The stick is too short, I busted my knuckles up striking it. Did get it started though. Make the whole contraption 2-3” longer.

You get REALLY good, hot sparks from this rod. However, It is hard to aim those sparks at a small target, making lighting those little ropes difficult. As long as you gather some nice, combustible kindling, you should have no problem using this to start a fire. For my immediate purposes, I'll be like a photon...traveling light...for a small craft adventure race. ;-)In a pinch, you could probably unravel an entire length of the included rope and make a bigger target. I will use it, but will also have a water proof, battery-operated spark thing (looks like a lighter but creates about a 3/16" long spark, which easily lights this included rope.I am admittedly inexperienced at starting fires like this, which may contribute to my difficulties in accurately directing the sparks to a small target. In my test, I had no rock or something to anchor the rod on while sparking it up. Probably could have positioned my hike boots in such a way to help with this.

I like ferro rods for emergency kits. They don't go bad in storage, and they tend to last a long time. This kit includes waxed rope, which lights very quickly with the sparks thrown from the rod. I keep one of these in everybody's pack, just in case.

Excellent little kit. Completely "analog" so to speak so you don't have to worry about having a lighter that may get damaged or evaporate fuel while it's in a bag. Just takes a little bit of a practice if you don't already know how to properly use flint and steel to start a fire, so I recommend that anyone not familiar with doing it tries it out in a safe spot before they go out and rely on it in a real world setting.

This little fire starter kit comes with all the tools you need to get a fire started for camping or emergencies. I haven't used it yet as I'm saving it for emergencies but am excited to give it a whirl.
