Thrifty King insulates the water so well that you can make it through the winter without supplying heat in many areas, and it takes little electricity in those areas where the winter is severe or energy free requirements are not met. The water is completely surrounded by fully insulated polyethylene plastic – including an insulated elliptical enclosure covering the drink areas. The covered water keeps the water cooler in summer and reduces loss of water due to evaporation. The closure also protects against mosquitoes breeding, lowering the risk of the spread of West Nile Virus. The CT 1 is single drink automatic waterer for cattle. ThermalEqualizer design in patented drinking well eliminates cold spots in water storage Elliptical closures tip easily so animals can drink without resistance, unlike round balls which take a great deal of pressure Easy access for easy maintenance High capacity valve, protected from cold by patented drink well Finger-lift service cover; No tools, springs, or clips Optional electric heat, immersion heater and supply line heat cable 10 year warranty Length 28in/71.12cm Width 20.3in/51.56cm Overall Height 25in/63.5cm Shipping Weight 61lb/27.67kg Drinking Height 19in/48.26cm Capacity 11.2gal/42.4L Herd Capacity 30 beef

I used several larger four station models of Ritchie waterers with two drink ports on each side divided by a 4” steel pipe fence in a 400 head cattle feedlot in eastern Washington. One four station drinker served two pens and 100 - 120 head of cattle. With cattle on heavy grain concentrate, the waterers need to be drained and cleaned weekly because grain and dirt will rinse from their mouths and sour the water in time. When bringing in new cattle, we’d block back one float one each side so they knew where to find water and learn to use the floating disk in the other hole. After 3 days, they were all educated and we’d release the submerged disk to cover the drink port. We excavated a 8’ deep hole and used a 48” galvanized ribbed culvert pipe vertically and built a steel frame to mount the Ritchie units above the pipe. The ground heat kept the unit ice free. We surrounded that with sloping 8” cement slab 6’ out on each side. Sloping the cement limited cattle from defecating on top of the waterer and kept all drainage away from the unit. Trouble free for over 20 years and handled sub-zero temps without freezing. One DOES need to pop the floating disks loose a couple of times each day because when cattle shove them underwater to get a drink, they will pop back up and freeze into the covered hole if not used by other cattle right away.

I’ve had this Ritchie auto water for a few years, the water stays clean and algae free. I bought another one to replace another brand. I have them placed between paddocks so the water is shared by two horses. In the winter I drop a bucket heater in the back to keep them from freezing. If you have several animals using it, freezing would not be an issue.
